Casey Key

Casey Key is located just south of Sarasota Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. Casey Key is approximately 8 miles in length, stretching from Siesta Key on the north to the Island of Venice at the southern tip. There are two bridges providing access to the key including a one lane "pivot bridge" or "swing bridge" dating back to the 1920's.

One of the few pivot bridges in the US, this connects
Casey Key on the north.

Casey Key Beach

Casey Key is a quiet secluded paradise. The refreshingly natural beaches of Casey Key are on the Gulf of Mexico with protected wild sea oats and mangroves providing a habitat for the scores of native island birds that share the island. There are also dolphins, manatees and other aquatic wildlife living just offshore. Here you can enjoy an unspoiled tropical key with  it's white sandy un-crowded beaches and picture perfect sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico. There is a public park that is beach front and bay front on the south end of Casey Key. The beach by the jetties have been known to be the best place for surfing during the season in this area of the Gulf of Mexico. Nokomis Beach is the oldest public beach in Sarasota County, encompassing 22 acres. The beach runs for 1/3 mile and offers parking, snacks, lifeguards, restrooms and showers.

Casey Key Waterfront Properties

Beach front or bay front is usually a choice that must be decided when shopping for waterfront property, however that is not the case on Casey Key. Most of the estate properties on Casey Key include a beach area on the Gulf of Mexico with fine white sand and Little Sarasota Bayfront land that offers boat docking. Homes are built along Casey Key Road which runs the length of the key. This is a beautiful scenic gulf-front drive with tropical trees forming a canopy over parts of the road. The north end of Casey Key is gated with a full-time guard.

A majority of the island is less than 300 yards wide, with the beaches along the Gulf on the west and Little Sarasota Bay on the east. At the south end is the Venice Inlet, providing ready access to the Gulf. Ground elevations on Casey Key are generally  higher than most barrier islands, which is highly beneficial to its homeowners. There are approximately 450 residences on the key, and the owners are a combination of full-time, seasonal and vacationing families. On the south end there are a few small motels and condos that have been there for years.

Single family homes start at over one million dollars and go to approximately ten million. There are a few lots left for approximately $600,000 per lot with deeded beach access for the neighborhood.

Casey Key History

Casey Key was called Chaises Key until 1856. A Captain in the US army named John Charles Casey that came to the gulf coast of Florida helped map the area and was assigned the job of moving the Seminole Indians that were left in the area. He was well-known for being fair and trying to peacefully work with the Indians. In 1856, after he mapped and surveyed the coastal area for the US government, Chaises Key was switched to Casey Key.
